Philosophy of Dentistry

Dr. Woodson’s Core Beliefs

There are those that highly value a personal relationship with a doctor that listens to their concerns, treats them like a family member and takes the time to fully evaluate not just dental health, but its relationship with their overall health, and then sincerely provide education so that they can make informed decisions regarding their oral health.

If all aspects of oral health breakdown/disease in the mouth are identified, the causes understood and addressed and one is motivated to care for their teeth daily, then one will have a good chance of keeping their teeth for as long as they need them and spend less time and money achieving that goal.

There are four phases of care in Dr. Woodson’s practice.

  • Evaluation and Diagnosis: Initial Consultation
  • Discussion of Treatment Options and Financial Planning
  • Disease Control Phase
  • Wellness Maintenance Phase

Evaluation and Diagnosis Phase:  Initial Consultation

The consultation and examination with an individual interested in being a member of our practice family is a bit different than most dental offices.  This consultation has one hour set aside with Dr. Woodson and his assistant only, must have minimal interruptions and is the foundation of his Philosophy: Always take the time to know your patient.

Human beings are complex and each is an individual.  Each has their own family, social, medical and dental histories and current states.  Dr. Woodson takes the time to ask questions and listen.  The doctor evaluates the patient and the patient evaluates the doctor and practice to decide if the practice philosophy meets their individual needs.

See our New Patients page for in depth insight into an Initial Consultation.

Some dental disease cannot be fully understood and diagnosed correctly with only a quick examination and review of x-rays.  There are usually several subtle signs present and the patient is rarely aware. If there is disease present, a sincere discussion with the doctor is offered so that there will be understanding of the underlying causes, treatment options, and the implications if there is no treatment provided.

Discussion of Treatment Options and Financial Planning

Part of our commitment to serving our practice members includes providing information that helps them to make more informed decisions about their oral health needs.  As a practice, we are true believers that preventative care and education are the keys to optimal dental health.  A standard of excellence in personalized dental care enables us to provide the quality dental services our practice members deserve.  We provide comprehensive treatment planning to achieve your optimal dental health.

During this phase you are educated about your conditions/disease.  All your treatment options will be discussed.  A decision will be made on the treatment that will work best for you.

Disease Control Phase

Dental diseases like tooth decay, broken teeth, periodontal disease (gum disease) are always treated more successfully and at a lesser overall cost if treated immediately.  This Disease Control Phase is designed around the desires that we all have to feel safe, relaxed, and able to fit our needs into our budget.

Wellness Maintenance Phase

Once the mouth is restored to a state of wellness, Dr. Woodson and his staff are committed to regular monitoring of your health with in-depth periodic evaluations, usually when your gingival therapy is performed (cleaning).  Your commitment during this Wellness Maintenance Phase is essential.

Keeping your mouth spotless with correct, consistent brushing, flossing and regular visits to your dental home are the keys to insuring more wellness and less risk of dental related disease.  A spotless mouth does not allow unhealthy bacteria to destroy your teeth with decay and jaw bone through periodontal disease.  The current scientific evidence links unhealthy mouths to an increased risk of poor diabetic control, high blood pressure, heart attacks, strokes, and low birth weight babies (See www.perio.org)
